All United States pre-1964 dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars are 90% silver. Half dollars minted 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver. The coins pictured above are referred to as culls. Heavily worn silver coins can still have value. At a minimum, they have the value of the silver content. Additionally, coins of rare mint marks and dates can have substantially more value. You need to find a qualified numismatist to properly grade your coins. There is an old saying about grading coins: " It is very easy to grade coins; all you need is a grading book, a loupe, and 30 years experience." Nothing sums up coin collecting better than that. When selling your coins or an inherited coin collection, it is very important to speak with someone you trust to give you the best advice. In my business, as a service to my clients, I pay market price for all silver coins. The values change constantly and we stay updated with the latest trends. There are collectors of U.S. gold coins all over the world! U.S. Gold coins need to be examined very carefully. Values are all over the board. Coins certified and slabbed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and other grading services can have premiums. Coin grading services have become popular for coin collectors. The nice thing is that they have a professional grading attached to them as well as a "serial number" for reference. However, there are variances (not every MS-62 is the same. Toning can effect value positively or negatively). The nice thing is when you have these graded coins you can generally get a bit more for them. Once again, find a trusted dealer if you want to sell any coins. You are welcome to visit my store, Nelson Estate Jewelers, in Mesa, Arizona.
